Summary

The “Paramonetària catalana” collection pretends to list and to document the metallic and paper tokens issued by individuals, private businesses and unofficial corporations in the Catalan area throughout history. Those tokens were used for very different purposes, such as replacement and complementation of the official small coinage; control of work, consumptions, merchandises or time managed by individuals belonging to a specific group; establishment of a commitment of cooperative purchase or expense; to ease gambling in the leisure and recreational societies; action of devices or vending machines; or publicity of products, shops and shows.

This volume, whose title is Gitons publicitaris a Catalunya (1850-1939) (Publicity tokens in Catalonia, 1850-1939), lists for the first time the tokens issued for advertising products, shops and shows in 19th and 20th century Catalonia. The main catalogue lists up to 128 tokens, dated prior to 1939, mostly issued in Barcelona during the decades after its 1888 Universal Exhibition.
